The FBI used data from hundreds of cities across Texas and compiled a list of the most dangerous areas of Texas, and the results may surprise you.
West Texas
Odessa is considered the most dangerous city in Texas with a high rate of aggravated assault. There crime rate is extremely high for its total population. Lubbock comes in at the number two spot with a lot of robbery. Amarillo is listed at number six with the highest number of reported rapes.
Houston
Houston is the only large metropolitan city that made the list. It comes in at number three with a high robbery and murder rate. Beaumont/Port Arthur are nearby cities to Houston and have the highest murder rates in Texas.
Texarkana
This North Texas city comes in on the list at number four with a high rate of assault.
The Border Cities
While some politicians would have you believe that the border is riddled with crime, it’s actually a fairly safe area. Dallas ranks at number 17 on the list where border cities McAllen is 18. Brownsville is considered the safest city in Texas with the lowest crime rate.
South Texas
The rest of the top ten list is comprised of San Antonio at number 9, Victoria at number 8 and Corpus Christi at number 7. All three cities have high numbers of reported rape. Corpus Christi also has the highest murder rate of the three.
Austin
Austin is listed as the safest metropolitan area in Texas coming in at number 21/24 on the list. The murder rate is very low and has 20% less crime than the other four major cities in Texas.
