The Austin Police Department has announced that during Memorial Day weekend in the city of Austin, the No Refusal Weekend DWI Initiative will again go into effect.

During the implemented times, which have not yet been announced, detectives will provide assistance in applying for blood search warrants in cases that have found drivers to be under arrest for DWI and who refuse to provide a sample of either breath or blood voluntarily.

Officials say that the initiative isn’t about making as many arrests as the Austin Police Department can, but more about keeping drivers who are unsafe off of the roads and ensuring that members of the general public always stay safe. The initiative will also ensure that officers have ample evidence from both breath and blood draws in order to prosecute those who not only drive drunk, but also put innocent people in danger.

It is expected that this initiative will go into effect during weekends, as the Austin Police Department has stated that weekends are more associated with events where alcohol will likely be present. It is also hopeful that the initiative will remind everyone that they should never drive while impaired.
