Football is as iconic to the state of Texas as longhorns and armadillos. Despite this, officials with the state Department of Transportation always encourage residents to enjoy their favorite games in a manner that is both safe and responsible. Since many football attendees start drinking early in the day, it’s easy to get in over their heads by the time they’re ready to go home.

This led to the department implementing the “Plan While You Can” Statewide Impaired Driving Football Campaign, which is designed to encourage football fans to establish a plan that will help them get home safely prior to making plans to attend a football game and/or party where there may be drinking taking place. The goal of the campaign is to reduce the overall number of DWI-related accidents that occur on the same days as football games, whether the game is college or professional football.

The department also reminds football fans to always have a plan established that will ensure they get home safely and that, as previously mentioned above, they make that plan prior to making their trip to the game. The designated driver should be chosen beforehand and remain completely sober the entire time. If there’s no designated driver chosen, the following options should always be considered:

*Grab a rideshare

*Remain where you are

*Contact a friend or family member to pick you up

*Take a bus

Those who choose to drink and drive can end up facing up to $17,000 in fees and fines, as well as being sentenced to jail and losing their driver’s license.
