Whether you have been spending a night out with friends or having a night out with colleagues from work, having a few drinks is something that always sounds like a fun time. Unfortunately, it can often be hard to tell when you’ve had too many drinks before the time comes for you to drive home. Thankfully, there are a few different ways in which you will be able to detect something like this before you end up making a huge mistake that will end up costing you big time.

Here are three ways in which you will be able to tell if you are too drunk to drive before you actually get behind the wheel.

Take the time to pay attention to some of the most obvious signs of alcohol intoxication. Some of these signs include poor coordination, slurred speech, a decrease in overall sensory perception, an obvious change in your general behavior, hand tremors, and the general smell of alcohol. If you notice any of these, this is a sign that you are too drunk to immediately get behind the wheel and drive. You will want to take some time to sober up before doing so.

Another sign that you are too drunk to drive is if you are experience a bout of short-term memory loss. For instance, have your friends question you about the things that you’ve just talked about. This is a great way to determine whether or not you are too impaired to get behind the wheel. If you are unable to recall your thoughts, or if your thoughts are too jumbled, this is a surefire sign that you’ve had too many drinks and that you need to wait before driving.

One other useful way to determine if you are too drink to drive is the finger to nose test. This requires that you stand up straight with your feet placed together and your eyes closed. Once you do this, begin touching the tip of your nose several times with the index finger of your right hand, then doing the same thing with the index finger of your left hand. Failing to do so is a sign that you are likely experiencing a lack of coordination due to alcohol impairment.
