An Austin DWI lawyer such as Gabriella Young can help, but it becomes more difficult for everyone during a non-refusal weekend. In Austin the month of March means Spring Break for students and SXSW for everyone. This annual event brings around 70,000 people to the city. This influx of people also brings an influx of drinking and driving.

The Austin Police Department has announced that March 3-20 during the hours of 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. there will be a ‘no refusal’ initiative. This means that if a police officer suspects someone of drinking and driving and they refuse to voluntarily provide a breath or blood sample the officer can quickly obtain a warrant.

“This initiative is an effort to enforce DWI laws, keep the public safe by encouraging drivers to make responsible decisions, and to apply for blood search warrants on suspects who refuse to provide a breath or blood specimen as required by law,” APD said in a press release.

The existence of ‘no refusal’ periods is made possible by the collaboration of police officers, judges and city clerks. By having certain law enforcement members on call, police can quickly obtain warrants that lead to arrest.

Austin offers many options for transportation if you find yourself unfit to drive. Bus routes go all throughout the city and bus passes can easily be purchased on your phone through their app. There are also several car-sharing apps available for download including Fasten, Fare, RideAustin, etc.

“This initiative is to remind everyone that their area law enforcement agencies encourage them to make the responsible choice not to drive if they are impaired in any way,” APD said.
